Woman wearing stretchy light wash wide leg jeans that fit at the waist

Why jeans gap at the back of your waist (and how to stop it)

Fit guide · Curvy · 3 min read

They fit over your hips and thighs. You sit down, and there it is: a gap at the back of your waistband big enough to fit your hand in. It is not your body. It is the pattern.

why it happens.

Most jeans are cut for a straight figure, where waist and hips are fairly close in size. If your hips and thighs are fuller than your waist, you are stuck choosing:

size for your hips

…and the waist is too big. Hello, gap.

size for your waist

…and they won't go over your hips.

Rigid denim makes it worse. It doesn't give where you need room, and doesn't hug where you need hold.

Stretchy light wash wide leg jeans, curvy fit

what actually fixes it.

1A curvy cut. More room through hips, seat and thighs, with a smaller waist to match.
2Real stretch. Hugs your waist and still gives when you move. Sit, squat, dance, and the waistband stays put.
3A high rise. Sits at your natural waist and follows your curve instead of cutting across it.
4The right size. Measure your waist and hips, then follow the size chart and size note on each product.

  • A tailor can take in the back of the waistband with a small dart.
  • A belt helps, but the fabric bunches. It hides the gap, it doesn't solve it.
