How to measure your inseam (and find jeans that are actually your length)

Your inseam is the one number that matters most when you buy jeans online. Not your height. Not your shoe size. Here is how to find it in two minutes, and what to do with it.

measure a pair you love.

The easiest and most accurate way. Grab the jeans in your closet with the length you like best.

1Lay them flat on the floor or a table and smooth out the legs.

2Put the end of the tape measure in the crotch seam, where the four seams meet.

3Measure along the inside of one leg, down to the hem.

4That number, in centimetres, is your inseam. Write it down.

no pair that fits? measure yourself.

1Stand straight, barefoot, feet slightly apart.

2Ask someone to measure from the top of your inner thigh, right at the crotch, down to the floor or to your ankle bone.

3To the floor = full length for wide leg and flare. To the ankle bone = ankle length for straight and barrel.

Measuring yourself is less exact than measuring a pair you own. Round to the nearest centimetre and use it as a starting point.

petite

Inseam 60–70 cm. Usually a good start under 160 cm.

regular

Inseam 71–79 cm. Usually 160–170 cm.

tall

Inseam 80–90 cm. Usually 170 cm and up.

Good to know

Height is only a rough guide. Two people of the same height can have very different legs. Your inseam beats your height every time.

three quick tips.

Wear heels a lot? Add 3 to 5 cm, especially for wide leg and flare.
Love a cropped look? Take 3 to 6 cm off for straight and barrel.
Between two lengths? Go longer. You can always hem a pair. You can't add fabric.
